Dragons’ Den winner launches competition for students
Dragons’ Den, the BBC television series has created some of the most successful British businesses. Now, one of the most memorable contestants to appear in the Den, is giving back and launching their own competition for children and young people to give them a platform for their own entrepreneurial ideas.
Duncan Bannatyne was the one to spot the potential of part-time franchise theatre school Razzamataz, which is still rated as the number five most successful Dragons’ Den business even after many years of appearing on the show.
MD and Founder of Razzamataz Denise Hutton-Gosney appeared on Series four and was offered a £50,000 investment for a 25% equity share.
Duncan Bannatyne explains:
“As a successful business man, I instinctively recognise an excellent opportunity. That’s why I chose to invest in Razzamataz Theatre Schools. The commitment, enthusiasm and sound business sense of the team, coupled with their proven track record of success led me to become part of the business.”
To help mark 20 years in the theatre school industry, Razzamataz is launching a number of competitions to current students to give them a platform for their own creativity.
“We want to give our students at Razzamataz the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking,” says Denise. “Unlike the BBC Den, our Dragons will give students lots of encouragement and support to make this a really positive experience for all.”
When Denise stepped into the Den, she did so with a number of students who performed the Razzamataz jingle. Now, 20 years on, we are looking to replace the original with a more contemporary version.
Students can be as creative as they like and explore any genre that they study in class. It could be pop, rap, musical theatre or rock.
“We are looking for a jingle that represents what Razzamataz means to our students as well as representing our ethos,” adds Denise. “Confidence, fun, life skills, making friends and increased fitness are just some of the things we think are great about Razz so we are looking forward to seeing how our students interpret this into our new jingle.”
For students with their own Dragons’ Den style business idea, schools across the UK are holding regional heats to select two of the best proposals. These will then be filmed and sent to Denise who will select the winner.
Opportunities to express themselves in a supportive environment is what makes Razzamataz unique and serves to provide young people with the aptitude to keep them motivated and show resilience. Duncan Bannatyne adds: “Razz skills keep young people active, instil a confidence and pride and encourage social skills. All of which are vital today.”
There are a number of prizes available including an Alexa and theatre tokens. Winners will be announced in December and unveiled in the big 20-year conference held in a stunning venue in London including a secret location for the evening event.
